Attention NEWSVINE! I think it is time to help one of our own. A Soldier named Rob Ballew.

Hello Viners. Many of you dislike me to the extreme and that is okay. This is not about me so please hear me out.

First of all Rob has no idea that I am doing this. Frankly I did not want to give him a chance to say no. I only know Rob through the vine. However, I feel christian love for the guy and I want to help him. Rob was one of my very first friends on the vine and has been very supportive. He happily gives me advice when I ask goofy questions.

From what I understand Rob has been a viner for about 4 years. I think he has given a lot to this site with his kindness and intelligent debate. Most of you probably already know that Rob is an American soldier. He has struggled to protect people like me and this great Country.

Rob is married with children and recently his family was evicted from from their home. He wrote an article about his recent struggles is the only reason I know this. To be honest I still don't know how to do links. I am not at all computer savvy. If anyone reading this has seen Rob's article please put the link with your comment or something.

Now, I have 22 bucks in earnings on newsvine...which was a real shock to me by the way! I would like to donate my earnings to Rob and his family.

I'm asking if anyone else will do the same..or just donate period out of your pockets.

Anyway, I want to know if Calvin or someone in charge can set it up to where whoever wants to can donate their earnings to the Ballew family.

Calvin, please respond to this if you see it.

Lets get going folks! We need to help our friend, fellow viner, and American soldier Rob Ballew!

RC,

If you have an existing paypal account, we simply need rob's account info to pay to. It's very easy.

If you don't have one, make one. :)

Once he enters his info in, we can transfer our funds to his account.

Once we have Rob's info, we can go from there.

Not sure how to transfer Newsvine earnings and such (or even how to determine what they are), but I'll happily transfer such to Rob if possible.

OK,

One more bit of bookkeeping to note:

When you are making a donation through PayPal, remember to click the little folder tab at the top over to the Personal section; and then mark your payment as a Gift.

That way Uncle SAM doesn't think Rob is getting paid for goods or services that need to be TAXED at the end of the year...

Thanks...

Well, I am surprised you two haven't heard about this aspect of NV since you both have been members over a year. Now js may not have has much as Soph because the later has seeded more stories...and earnings are based on the articles you link/seed/write...the more you do, and the more there are views, the more money you can make....

*You can even set up a google analytics (click on 'Customize Column' then click on 'Tracking' tab and follow the steps written there)...to link to your NV page and can then track who/where the views are coming from...that is an interesting piece of info....people view mine from all over the world and from most every country...cool stuff...A lot of viners use it and it's simple to set up*

Getting back on track now....

In order to see your earnings, while you are logged into NV, there is that black bar across the top of the page (well about 2 inches down really) usually just above the 'title' in most articles...

Anyway, click on the 'earning's' link and log in (go through the reset process if you have forgotten it, it's easy to do)

Once you sign in the 'earnings' page will give you the 'amounts' earned each month...usually it runs about 2 months slow...but...it is is a nice thing...

Its real fast. Newsvine sends out payments twice a month and once they do.. they hit paypal fast. It usually takes longer for paypal to send money to your bank then visa versa. It's pretty prompt though.

Is he still active military? How are we (as a country) letting this happen to an active service member? I don't understand. However, my ignorance of all things military is profound.

#1.41:Does anyone know how long it takes for earnings to show up in pay pal?

Hi friends, all. I think you must have a minimum of $25.00 for the amount to go to your Pay Pal account as a cash payout from NewsVine. (that the latest info I have?) Double check this though.

Otherwise, there are other charitable organizations that you can donate your "earnings" to i.e., Red Cross, Humane Society, etc. even if under the $25.00 minimum.

Also check with Pay Pal about a "fee" for handling the money; I think Pay Pal will charge you a nominal fee- that is taken also from the account, before dispensing the balance to the recipient (Bellew). Pay Pal will not ask you for any money though!

I have dealt with Pay Pal for years as an Ebayer, so my information comes from my dealing with them through this entity. So everybody please check so you will have no surprises just in case there have been some changes made.

Pay Pal has always been reputable, as far as I am concerned, but always check the fine print/details and ask any questions before you submit payment, etc.

Good luck to all and especially you, Mr. Bellew.

Teo, I don't think we needed to see your own personal 'earnings' info...

RC could you do a quick edit here?...before deleting the comments just copy paste Teo's main point into a separate comment...(you will have to do this, just write a comment and in it reference Teo's two comments)...and then delete those two comments made by Teo...

Nothing against Teo here (you do good works), and thanks for being so generous...but, we shouldn't be seeing your personal info...

Hey, dc.

I don't think there's anything to be concerned about with Teo revealing his earnings. It's just his way, ya know? That's Teo.

Plus, his feelings may be hurt as its his way of helping, so to speak. Just an opinion, is all.

Respectfully.

I put it on for documentation. It sends it to where? This is for confirmation.Saying I sent it and sending it whith proof are two different things.I want to make sure Rob gets it.The full amount. And this is just a form of insurance...not bragging. In fact that is almost 2 years of earnings and I'm sort of embarrassed that it is so little...If I had more I would have sent more.

So please except my apologies if this was taken in the wrong context and anyone was offended by this action. I want to know first if this can be done in this method and if it doesn't where did the money go...so I can render to the proper recepient of my choice.

Soosalah,thanks.

And this "was" sort of a challenge and exercise to others who are wanting to help, DCSTONE.

dcstone, I'm sure that all sounds easy to you. It probably sounds bad, but I will be honest and tell you I have never copy pasted anything. Sorry if that bothers anyone. I guess if I'm going to write articles I should learn all this computer stuff.

Previous to newsvine I only used my computer to play poker. You know, for real money.

For whatever its worth I want everyone to know I appreciate greatly all the help including folks just giving us information about pay pal, etc.

I don't even really understand or care about getting extra vines and all that.

Teo, no problem...

Regarding-Your donation, I do see it as a great challenge to others...it was very generous of you to do it.

But, the long monthly list was not necessary...

Oh well...

RC...if you were to put you mouse curser the the left of the first letter of the first line of anything you want to copy...click the 'left side button' of your mouse and at the same time drag it across everything you want to copy (it should be highlighting while you do this) then move your mouse away for a sec...to bring the 'pointer back'...then put the pointer on the highlighted section and right click again, a box will pop up...click on the word 'Copy'...this will copy everything you just highlighted...

Then start your new comment put your pointer in the comment box, right click and click on the word 'Paste'...

The whole highlighted section will now be in that comment box...

This may help...

OMG.. it took me a while to get it figured out but, I finally got signed into paypal. **Whew** Anyhow Rob, I hope you take this money I sent and take your family out to a nice dinner and a movie. It sounds like you could all have a nice little break together. Enjoy!!!! (((((hugs to Rob and family))))) I will pray things will turn over quickly for you and your family (and all the other people going through hard times). Peace.

I have no idea how to get NV funds, or if I have any. If I do, and you can tell me how to access it, I will happily contribute.
Also, I do know that the Army or Marines, or whatever, has programs to get them housing. It really looks bad for the military to have their soldier's families living in cars and on the streets. Someone in his home state can contact the state Senator and bring his situation to their attention if there's no action to get his family housing.

At the top of the page on where you can click earnings next to your account. You'll have to log in again to check. You'll need a paypal account.

On the bright side he has started a job and things are looking up. So far so good and I drop by his column from time to time just to make sure.

If they haven't set it up, you can use your existing paypal account.

  • Deposit your earnings into it
  • log into your paypal
  • "send money" to robert.n.ballew@us.army.mil.

Be sure to note that the sent money is a "gift" and not a purchase of a good or service. This can be found on the 'other' tab when you are sending.

If you already have a Paypal acct, just transfer $ into it from your own bank (unless you already have enough in your pp acct to cover the amount you want to send) and then use the 'send money' button and follow the steps using his email addy...it will transfer to him. Make sure you press all the proper 'send money' buttons...because it will have you verify the transfer on a separate page....

And mth3 is correct on one of the pages it asks for a 'reason' and under the 'personal' tab click the gift radio button...

We need Calvin to set it where we can send it to Rob no matter the amount. So many people have 5, 2 or 10 dollars to donate for Rob. Certainly it cannot be hard for them to set it up for us to give him any amount. Afterall, we can give any amount to their list of charities.

Can anyone really speak with Calvin so we can get this done?

You can still set up your Paypal account in the mean time (it's free) and when in the next month or so you hit the minimum in earnings through NV you can transfer it over...and from there you can put it into RB's acct or your own bank etc...heck you can even use it to 'buy' things online without tapping into or revealing your personal bank acct info (that's always a good thing, adding a layer of protection between your money and potential thieves)

And Rob, please let us know that the money actually got to you when someone says they have sent it. The point being I want to make sure there are no glitches in the system and that you really receive the money.

Actually a member of the Guard right now.

Recommend speaking to your commander about AGR. That may be a possibility for you, and it would place you on active duty for a short time. Here in Iraq, I worked with some NG Soldiers who voluntarily extended their active duty time, because they had no jobs to go back to in CONUS. Not to say you'd have to deploy - AGR Soldiers are used in multiple CONUS assignments as well.

No...

Please...

That is incorrect...

You have to 'LOG IN' to your own Paypal acct and send the money from there...you can NOT send it directly from the NV earnings page.

Sure, people can transfer their NV earnings to the PP acct...they just cannot do it directly FROM the NV earnings page to RB...

Thanks for clearing that up dcstone. I never had a pay pal account before and have never cashed out money from here before. Just want folks with over 25 in their newsvine accounts to donate to Rob.

And I wish those with only a few dollars could donate too. There is probably 2 or 300 people who could give Rob a few bucks from their newsvine accounts. Which could make a HUGE difference in the amount of help he receives.

Understood...

Just wanted to clarify that so there was no confusion.

But, anyone can open a PP acct anytime...since it takes a few days to 'confirm' bank info it is best to get it set up before you need it. If I remember correctly you said you were at about $22, in the next month or so (or even with this months earnings report) you may reach that min. for cashing out...

Now, when that happens realize that cash out days only happen twice a month through NV so you may have to wait until the following 5th or the 20th which ever comes first after the earnings report...and then once those days arrive it takes a couple of days to be verified by PP...

In other words look at the earnings report on the 17th, 18th, or 19th and if there is enough $ at that time then put in for the pp transfer and it will occur on the 20th....if you wait for the 21st (or later all the way up until the 4th) to look at your earnings and put in for the transfer to your PP acct then you will have to wait for the 5th for the transfer to occur...

As I said before, this is not all done automatically, you have to understand the 'timing' of everything and take that into consideration....

I think anyone with a paypal account would be better off just going to PayPal and sending some money directly. I don't think NV will set up charity link for such a specific purpose. For one thing, the charities are tax deductable. Using NV to send money directly to an individual would probably get NV in trouble.

This is a story that upsets me in many ways. Our wars have dragged on longer than most expected and they are taking a real toll on service men and women. It's not just servicemen being evicted these days, but an awful lot of victims of the housing market/credit default swap bubble. The emphasis so far has been mainly on saving bankers as opposed to home owners.

And for all the patriotic posing we do in this nation, where is the sense of urgency to help our veterans with there issues of lost jobs, homes, and PTSD?

I'm off to paypal to send some cash (probably $25) to "robert.n.ballew@us.army.mil" and I encourage everyone else reading this to do exactly the same thing, whether you are a NewsVine member or not.

Also, if anyone is in a position to help out with an employment opportunity or placement, I likewise encourage you to contact Mr. Ballew at that email address.

If we can't help those right in front of us, then where else would we start?

Rob has a good point - there are so many who need help. But, Rob, we can't help them all. I read a recent study (for whatever studies are worth) that said if one or two people need help, we chip in - if it's hundreds of people, we sort of get overwhelmed. I know I can't afford to help everyone in the world, or even the US, who needs it. So yes, I do focus on individuals. Last year I sponsored a golf tournament for the National Kidney Foundation, we raised $8k, in the name of a good friend. That doesn't mean there weren't hundreds of charities who needed that money just as much.

Thank you RC for this idea and I'm in. I've always thought that our soldiers go through hell and then aren't given much training to get them employed in the civilian world, and in the long run I'd like to support something like that if I ever get rich. But I'm not rich so helping one soldier is the best I can do for now. And what better soldier than Rob?

relentlesscomedy, I'm one liberal among many that will support you (and of course, Rob) with this hardship. I may not agree with you on most issues, but when a fellow 'Viner is down, it's time to put differences aside and band together for a greater cause. I have already donated my earnings to The Sierra Club, but I'll make a donation directly into Rob's paypal account.

I just read Rob's story a few minutes ago, and I can't imagine going through such a hard time with children. His answer to his daughter's bitter remark about hating the well-off people made me stop and think about how our children really view the world.

That broke my heart. We can't let this happen to our children, our future...I hope this helps change her outlook some. It must be so scary for them. I can't imagine, but I can certainly understand her thinking this way - it's just really, really sad.

RC, this is wonderful what you are doing! It's rough being homeless with a family.

I should know, my mom and us three ended homeless in 1984 and we wer all minors and no one cared about and my mom ended losing the younger two, and even with working hard we still were homeless for 6-7 years...

If anything to prevent anyone else from going through the horrors we went through, I'm all for it! Count me in!

You may have just helped someone in here and not even know it.

Just because that house is big and beautiful and your life at the moment isn't no one ever really knows what goes on behind closed doors. The outside may be pretty but the inside may be going through the same or even worse.

If you're going through hell keep on going, don't slow down If you're scared, don't show it, you might get out before the devil even knows you're there

I read your comment as well & cried like a new born baby. Your article was talking to me & millions! Rob Ballew is so blessed & possibly not aware of it yet; but he will. GoldenGate, your heart & soul are beautiful. I thought of an ole song from many moon years:

NOT much touches my "heart", (cold little black stone that it is...) but,
AMERICANS directly HELPING AMERICANS makes a point POLITICS can't
even TOUCH. I guess I have to scrape the rust and dust off my wallet,
and crowbar the damn thing open.

Rob Ballew's Page: "two time Iraqi Freedom Vet, National Guardsman,
and VERY PROUD AMERICAN."

Rob Ballew's STAND on being BROKE:
"we might be down but we will never be counted out"

This isn't a BEGGAR or a BUM, nor charity case, sometimes bad things
happen to good people, because "it rains on the rich and poor alike."

My Newsvine Account says $40.47, we'll get that OUT soon as I figure
the send.

As long as you're still breathing, it ain't over YET. MY family is
ALL-American Army pukes, Navy pukes, and Marine Corps.
They say, "charity" begins at HOME.

Welcome HOME, Rob. We're with ya. Hope it helps.

I don't have any earnings on the Vine , but as a fellow Veteran , I feel several things , first anger that this could happen in America , to a veteran , and to any American. I'm not going to get on my soapbox today , I just need to know how to get a few dollars to Rob ?

It's not about political differences , it's about human compassion , and love for your brother the way Christ would have us do.

I'll check my Pay Pal and see if I can send it directly , or if there's any other fund let me know.

Rob- where are you from? Are there any services you could utilize? I understand that there are programs you could utilize to save your home. Have you attempted to use any of them? I have friends that are too proud to use the programs and I don't understand why. I mean if you have been paying into the system why not use temporarily those services that you qualify for? What about churches in the area? What about your community? I am just mentioning this as I am sure that Rob would not want to feel like a charity case. He is a proud Veteran and deserves to have his home but many of us are walking in his shoes right now. What about moving out of your state? maybe we can help you find relocation and a home till u get on your feet somewhere else. I have been in the same boat and did not look into all that is offered to those in need. Please let us know an update and when I get paid Ill shoot you over a donation via paypal. Take care!

If we could only take care of each other without the use of the word SOCIALISM. I care about my fellow neighbor and our soldiers... we all deserve a place to live.

It is a little late to get help about that house. I have checked some county and local services as well as the VA. I have been focusing a lot on finding employment so when we do find a home we can be sustained. We as a family would have very little issue relocating, except maybe my daughter but currently we are keeping the search local because we do have family here that helps. Oh BTW I am from Indiana.

Thanks again everyone the current total is 560.93 cent. I am in awe over the generosity here thank so much.

Rob, thanks for keeping us up to date. I'm sure some of this bothers you as you are obviously an independent proud guy. I think it makes everyone feel good to hear that the money is getting to you and knowing that it is a nice amount to make a difference for you.

As for that mention of"socialism" By Mrs Lovelee

All I know is that those of us choosing to help Rob is much different than Gov't run socialism. Anyway, that is a discussion for a different thread.

Let me add that I firmly believe our Gov't should take much better care of our Troops when they get home.

    Rob Ballew,

I don't know what you do for a living, or if you're in a position to move and/or travel, but as FrostyOne said, there is alot of work out here. I live in Southeastern Montana and I can tell you this:

The Transcanadian Pipeline, Keystone Pipeline Extension is coming directly through the town I live in. There is a TON, and I mean a TON of work here. Laborors start at about 18 bucks an hour and it goes up from there. Housing is pretty cheap and there's NO STATE RETAIL SALES TAX.

It's good here man. You could come out alone and be in a position to move your family in no time.

I know lots of people here and could help you line up a job very easily Rob if you want to consider it. And I mean they are crying for people out here for real.

Why don't you email me and we can talk it over, I can put you right in touch with the people who hire, I give you my word.

It's up to you Rob, but like Frosty said, there is a @!$%#LOAD of really good paying jobs out here where i live right now, we're in the middle of a boom.

Let me know what you wanna do.................
